Balıkesir
University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Virology Department continues its
education, research and service activities for the diagnosis, control and
prevention of viral diseases important for animal health and public health.
Viral infections seen in different animal species are scientifically studied in
the department and both basic and applied studies are carried out in this
field.
The Department
of Virology aims to provide students with a strong theoretical and practical
education in the field of virology within the scope of the undergraduate
program of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. In this context, compulsory and
elective courses such as General Virology, Special Virology, Viral Vaccines,
Viral Zoonoses are given at the undergraduate level. In addition, postgraduate
courses and studies are also carried out. Course contents cover topics such as
identification of viral agents, infection mechanisms, transmission routes,
diagnostic methods, vaccine development processes and zoonotic risks. In
addition, it is aimed to develop the professional knowledge and skills of
students with laboratory practices and projects carried out in the department.
The projects
carried out in the Department monitor the spread of animal diseases, develop
diagnostic methods and continue studies on the molecular epidemiology of
various animal viruses. Serological tests and molecular diagnostic methods are
used in the Virology Department laboratory.
Projects
carried out within the department are supported by TÜBİTAK and BAP. With these
projects, virological and serological diagnosis of some viral infections seen
in pets and farm animals is made, and molecular studies are carried out to
reveal the strains circulating in the region, and thus studies are carried out
to develop information and technologies that will contribute to the livestock
sector and public health and to contribute to the literature. The department is
not limited to education and research, but also provides diagnostic services in
cooperation with private veterinarians, public institutions and the private
sector.
There is a
professor working in the Department of Virology. Within the scope of the
education and training provided by our department; it is aimed to convey to our
students the identification and general characteristics of the virus, the
spread and effects of viral diseases in the organism according to the species,
the techniques and laboratory tests used in the diagnosis of the agent, the
points to be considered when sending samples to the laboratory, the information
regarding control and protection, both theoretically and practically, and to
train them as veterinarians equipped to produce solutions to the problems they
may encounter in the field.
